What “paint” do you use to coat the metal before you weld it? I always thought the metal had to be bare before welding. I was concerned it would just rust fast if I leave it bare to allow welding.

To answer your question Steven Watson most insurers if not all have stopped reporting to Carfax in order to lessen their losses to diminished value claims which only leaves reporting up to the owners or shops and none of us have the time or need to report accidents…it’s a big enough pain in the ass to repair the cars and get parts at this point…

I'll say the exterior sheet metal is shit today. Old man had somebody side swipe his passenger front fender on his Canyon. I was legitimately massaging dents out of the fender with my fingers. I'd be surprised if the fender weighted a a couple pounds. I used to do auto body work in a prior life so I have experience... just never had my hands on a brand new panel. Which makes sense now because I can see the hood flutter at highway speeds... Beyond that the structure of vehicles today is far superior than years past. Energy is absorbed and passed around the passenger compartment. So many people walk away from accidents that were debilitating or lethal in years past. Same goes for emissions. The emissions systems are the sole reason we have the power and efficiency we enjoy today. But the uneducated will still bitch about emissions. Emissions that extended their quality of life five years.

new parts make it easy. Try using junkyard rear quarter panels like i have to.. have to remove the quarter panel from the junkyard cut, then do the same to the car.. I have used the rear body panel, right side quarter panel and trunk floor all from a junkyard car, and installed it all as 1 piece, try showing some of that sometime.. all new parts make jobs easy..

probably better to leave about 1/8th overlap, beat it down to a joggle and lap weld. Trying to butt weld that thin is a pain.

Not as bad as my Jeep liberty You could fill a 5 gallon bucket with rust just using your pinkie. Luckily the frame was factory galvanized so it is sturdy enough. But the body rust is so that soon I might be able to stick my leg through the door sill when the door is closed! It was previously my uncle's, we live in the salt belt and he never washed it! He is a really good man but a little silly sometimes.
